Course title: OpenVMS system and Network Management II
Length: 4 days
Target audience:
Technical support staff with little or no experience in managing
OpenVMS systems that may be part of larger networks and/or OpenVMS Clusters.
Prerequisites:
Students taking this course should be able to:
- Manage system users, which requires:
- Maintaining the user authorization file (UAF) and volume quota files
- Creating user file directories (UFDs)
- Controlling user processes
- Manage system resources, which requires:
- Mounting and dismounting disk and tape volumes
- Setting device characteristics
- Starting and stopping print and batch queues
- Performing full and incremental backups and restores of disk volumes
- Starting up and shutting down a system using the default startup procedure
These requirements can be met by completing the OpenVMS System and Network Node Management I course.
Course overview:
OpenVMS System and Network Node Management II continues the system management training presented
in OpenVMS System and Network Node Management I. This course prepares the student to modify an established system
that is part of a clustered and/or networked environment.
This course provides students with the information and guided practice
they need to perform the tasks required of system managers in an operational OpenVMS VAX, OpenVMS Alpha, or VMScluster system environment.
These tasks include managing disks and queues, installing layered products, monitoring system resources, and performing basic system customization tasks.
Further, the course enables the system manager to manage LAT services, such as terminal services and remote print queues.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe major system resources and their function in an OpenVMS environment.
- List the components of a DECnet network.
- Create and use queues, including forms definition and management.
- Define and manage LAT services.
- Manage disk and tape volumes.
- Describe the functions of the system startup and login files.
- Set system parameters using AUTOGEN and SYSMAN.
- Install OpenVMS layered products and updates.
- Monitor system resources.
- Perform tasks that enhance system security.
