Overview

The RA4x00 are high-performance external storage systems using various Fibre Channel devices and the Fibre Channel I/O Standard to connect servers to external storage systems. The Compaq StorageWorks RAID Array 4000 (RA4000), formerly the Fibre Channel Storage System, is an external storage solution incorporating Fibre Channel interconnect technology. The Compaq StorageWorks RAID Array 4100 is a fibre channel storage product similar to the RA4000. The RA4100 design is based on the RA4000 and incorporates Ultra2 Hot-Plug drives.

Similarities between RA4100 and RA4000:

Same RA4000 controller (dual-channel, wide-ultra SCSI-3, fibre array controller); a second RA4000 may be purchased as an option for redundancy
Same power supply
Same metal chassis
Same Fibre Storage Hubs, GBICs, Fibre Host Adapters, and Fibre Cables are used in the same Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop architecture (FCAL)
Same hot-plug fan assembly
Same power backplane and system management logic board

Differences between RA4100 and RA4000:

RA4100 uses an Ultra2 drive cage; however, drives will run at Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 speeds due to the RA4000 controller.
RA4100 uses a faceplate that divides the enclosure into four sections, each with space for three hot-plug Ultra2 drives (see picture above).
RA4100 uses a different drive backplane
RA4100 comes standard with the second redundant power supply.
RA4100 comes standard in Rack form only ; a Rack to Tower conversion kit is available.
